I have been disabled since 2001 with a "Flat Back" condition which prevents me from walking or standing for than 2 minutes. However, the real killer for me is I can't sit for more than 30 minutes without raising my left leg. My Doctors suggested that I trying riding a recumbent bike and it has changed my life.
On a bike path I can hold my own with most cyclists and no one notices I am disabled until I get off the trike. I also ride on occasions with other riders using hand trikes and they have the same experiences. On several occasions I have had to use my wheel chair on the trail/bike path and haven't had any problems, but everyone knows I am disabled.
I try to ride 20 to 25 miles every day and as a result, my weight is down 30 lbs. and I feel much better. I prefer riding bike paths rather than the local roads because the bike paths are safer in my area.
(The helmet is to keep my ears warm - this picture was taken on a cold day)
